Awareness Campaign On Cashless Transations



Govt. Degree College Billawar organized one day Awareness Workshop under Vittiya Saksharata Abhiyaan (VISAKA) on “Cashless Transactions. Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, principal of the college presided over the function. The workshop was intended to educate the students and faculty members to adapt digital mode of transactions. A number of college students including Mohd. Bilal, Ms. Arti Devi, Mohd. Ashraf and Ms. Amrit Bharti expressed the merits and necessity of going digital payment system aftermath the demonetization. Dheeraj Goswami, Associate Executive J&K Bank, Billawar, who was the resource person, delivered a detailed lecture on various modes of electronic transfer of funds along with practical demonstrations. He focused on the various advantages of cashless transactions and also underlined the necessity of exercising precautions during such transactions. A large no. of students and faculty members attended the workshop and interacted with the resource persons to clear the apprehensions regarding digital mode of payment. In the end Prof. Sanjeev Gupta presented the vote of thanks.



 


Celebration of National Voter's Day



Govt. Degree College, Billawar in collaboration with District Election office, Kathua celebrated the National Voters’ Day in the premises of Govt Degree College, Billawar. The celebration started with the assembly of students taking National Voters’ Day pledge and distribution of EPIC card to the newly enrolled young voters. Later a symposium was organized on the topic Right to Vote: The base of democracy. Dr. R. S.Charak, SDM Billawar was the chief guest on the occasion and the function was presided over by Sh. Suresh Kumar Sharma, Principal of GDC Billawar. In all, 10 students from GDC Billawar, New Age Degree College, Phinter and GHSS, Billawar participated in it and threw light on the topic. Their performances were adjudged by the jury comprising Prof Joginder Kumar, Prof Rakesh Sharma and Lecturer Arjun Singh on the bases of Content, Presentation and Pronunciation. Ruhi Mankotia, BSc Part-III was adjudged as the best speaker while the 2nd and 3rd positions were secured by Arti and Deepika of Sem-II respectively. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest exhorted the eligible students to enroll themselves in the Electoral Roll and become a voter who is the real ruler of the democratic govt. He guided them as to how they can identify their Booth Level Officers from the website of Chief Electoral Officer, J&K and get themselves registered in the electoral roll. The Principal of the college advised the audience to exercise their supreme right to vote and elect the right representatives for good governance. In the last mementos were given to all the winners. The entire event was compeered and conducted by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma.



 


Symposium on "Road safety–time for action" on the eve of 27th Road Safety Week



On the eve of 27th Road Safety Week, a symposium on the topic “Road safety – time for action” was organized in Govt. Degree College, Billawar in collaboration with Sub Division Magistrate, Billawar and RTO, Kathua on 16-01-2015. A large number of students from different colleges and schools participated in the said symposium. Dr. RS Charak, SDM Billawar was the chief guest and Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, Principal of GDC Billawar was the guest of honor on the occasion.


Speaking on the occasion Dr. RS Charak apprised the audience about various laws related to the road safety and traffic. He stress upon the students to not drive any vehicle without having proper driving licence and also urged participants to abide by traffic rules and cooperate with the administration to ensure smooth running of traffic.


Prof. Suresh Kumar, Principal of the college exhorted upon the students to refrain themselves from violating the safety rules and also emphasized on the importance of road safety and need to disseminate information about the safety among the public and the motor vehicle users especially youth.


Ms. Tavsum Kousar of Hr. Sec. School, Billawar won the first prize and Ms. Yasmine Ali of Govt. Degree College Billawar and Miss. Ruhi Mankotia of New Age Degree College, Billawar stood second and third respectively.

Symposium on Role of Youth in AIDS Awareness


Red Ribbon Club of the Govt. Degree College Billawar today organised a symposium on the eve of “National Youth Day” on the topic “Role of Youth in AIDS Awareness.” Prof. Sanjeev Gupta presided over the function.

A lot of students participated in the said symposium and threw light on the various ways the youth can contribute in disseminating awareness on AIDS. The performances of the students were adjudged by the jury comprising Prof Joginder Kumar, Lecturer Rupali Gupta and Lecturer Sunita on the bases of the content, pronunciation and presention. Ms Arti of Semester-I was adjudged first, Ms. Yasmine of BA Part-III and Mr. Mohd. Bilal of Semester-I stood second and third respectively. Consolation prize was given to Ms. Manisha of BA part-III. Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma, in-charge Red Ribbon Club exhorted upon the students to come out of their comfort zone and spread the awareness about the AIDS among the masses.In the last Prof Joginder Kumar announced the result and also presented the vote of thanks.


 

Rrecruitment Drive in GDC Billawar


Under Project UDAAN, an initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs implemented by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) organized a recruitment drive in Government Degree College Billawar for two days i.e. on 22-12-2015 and 23-12-2015 .UDAAN Team was on a the mobilization and awareness drive in tehsil Billawar from the last few days for motivating the unemployed youth to take part in the drive and avail the various job opportunities under this project. A written test along with Group Discussion and interview was conducted for the selection of candidates for above said categories. The selected candidates will undergo 03 to 06 months training and a stipend of Rs. 2500/- per month will be paid to the selected candidates during training period along with free boarding, lodging and meals. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs in various companies across various sectors. Prof. Suresh Kumar, principal of the college congratulated the selected candidates and thanked Udaan team for their visit in GDC Billawar for providing employment opportunity to unemployed youth of tehsil Billawar under UDAAN project. From college side the whole program was coordinated by Convener, College Placement Cell Prof. Joginder Kumar.


 

Govt. Degree College, Billawar in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra, Kathua organized a Declamation Contest on the topic “Patriotism and National Building”


Govt. Degree College, Billawar in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra, Kathua organized a Declamation Contest on the topic “Patriotism and National Building”on 15-12-2015. A large number of students participated and shared their views with the audience. Ist, 2nd and 3rd postioned were attained by Ms. Yasmine Ali of B.A part-III, Rukhsana Akhter of B.Sc. part-III and Ms. Amrit Bharti of B.Sc. Part –II respectively. All the three winners will further participate at district level, state level & at National Level. Principal of the college, Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma exhorted upon the students that patriotism is a major factor for national building. He appealed the youth to remain patriotic and commit themselves to nation-building. He also underlined the importance of discipline and good morals to help promote national unity and cohesion. Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof.Gurdayal and Prof. Joginder Kumar acted as jury members. The event was compered by Mr. Sayam Jandial of B.Sc. Part-III.


 

Press Release Mega Placement Drive in GDC Billawar Under Project UDAAN.

A two days mega placement drive was held in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 31-08-2015 and 01-09-2015 under Project UDAAN by Government of India, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) executed the whole drive. More than 10 corporates visited the college are Reliance HR, Accenture, Sebiz, CIPET, Prolific, Excel Info Com, Sahaj-e-Village, Royal Orchid, Mount Talent Consulting, IMS health, vision India staffing.

Large no of candidates of various stream like BA, B.Sc. in Chemistry and students of engineering background turned up for this drive. A written test along with Group Discussion and interview was conducted for the selection of candidates. The selected candidates will undergo 3-6 months training by the respective corporates. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs in various companies. Principal of the college, Dr. Nater Singh thanked NSDC team for their visit in GDC Billawar and providing employment opportunity to unemployed graduate of tehsil Billawar in particular and J&K state in general under project UDAAN.

Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized a symposium on the topic “Gandhi and Secularism” on 19th October 2015 in which a large number of college students participated and spoke on the subject which is also the need of the hour in the present scenario. The performances of the participants were adjudged by the jury comprised by Prof. Satishwer Singh, Prof. Sanjeev Gupta and Prof. Joginder Kumar on the basis of Content, Diction and Pronunciation. Ms Jasmine Ali of B.A Part-III stood first and Ms. Manvi Gupta and Ms. Paru Pariya secured second and third positions respectively. The students passionately threw light on the Gandhian philosophy of secularism that envisages pluralism, tolerance and coexistence as far as religious diversity of India is concerned. In the end, Dr. Nater Singh, Principal of the college thanked the Debates/Symposia committee for organizing the symposium on such an important and current issue that forms the core of Indian civilization.

In his address, he expressed that Gandhiji symbolizes the ethos of Indian secularism which extends equal treatment to all the religions and thus does not confer dominant status to any particular religion. The whole event was compeered and organized by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma of Political Science department.

Govt Degree College Billawar in collaboration with the Sub-Division Administration Billawar organized the symposium on the topic ‘Preventive Vigilance as a Tool for Good Governance’ which is this years’ theme of the Vigilance Week being celebrated by the Central Vigilance Commission. Dr R.S.Charak ,SDM Billawar was the chief Guest and Sh. Vishavjeet Singh ,Tehsidar Billawar was the Guest of Honour on the occasion. To begin with, Tehsildar Billawar threw light on the various aspects of Preventive Vigilance and its role in curbing the corruption and hence providing good governace. A large number of students participated in the symposium. Their performances were adjudicated by the jury comprising Sh Vishavjeet Singh, Tehsildar Billawar, Prof Satishwar Singh and Lecturer Roopali Gupta on the basis of the content, pronunciation and presentation. Aarti and Anjali Devi secured first and second positions respectively and were awarded with the mementos . While speaking on the occasion, the chief guest threw light on the various enactments like Public Services Guarantee Act, Right to Information, vetc which empower people to hold the administration accountable.He exhorted the students to inculcate moral character so that the menace of corruption can be eliminated from the root itself. He also made realize the students that its peoples’ administration and their participation is of utmost importace in curbing corruption and ensuring good governance. The program was compeered by Prof Amit Kumar Sharma.


 

GDC Billawar organized interactive session on ''Drug Abuse and AIDS'' to celebrate Red ribbon Week


Red Ribbon club of Govt. Degree College (GDC) Billawar organized an interactive session on the topic ‘’Drug Abuse and AIDS ‘’ for the awareness among the college students in which Dr. Lakhwinder Singh, BMO Billawar was the resource person. The function was presided over by Dr Nater Singh, principal of the college. To begin with, the resource person tried to know from the students as to what they mean by drugs and drug abuse. After listening to their responses, he dwelled on the use and abuse of the drugs and established the link between drug abuse and spread of AIDS. He explained that the adolescent age is age of experiments and excitement to try new and pleasurable things. This makes them vulnerable and so they easily fall in the trap of drug abuse leading to severe addiction which is one of the prime causes of problems at personal, professional and social levels. He further informed that how drug abusers use and exchange syringes which is also one of the prime cause of the AIDS. So he stressed upon the students not to try drugs for pleasure but use these for curing the ailments.

Dr. Nater Singh, Principal of the college also spoke on the occasion and threw light on importance and objective of Red Ribbon club and also launched a campaign against drug abuse by unveiling a poster on ‘’Respect Yourself’’, ’’Self Worth and dignity ’’ and ‘’ Take care of Yourself’’ in the wake of Red Ribbon Week being celebrated from Oct 23 to 31. He emphasised upon the students that the life is all about living a meaningful life and not about wasting it by seeking artificial enjoyment through abuse of drugs. He also explained the importance of Red ribbon symbol which signifies ‘’Abuse of Drug Use’’, ‘’Drunk Driving ‘’ and showing ‘’Solidarity with the HIV/AIDS Patients’’. The entire event was coordinated and organized by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma and Prof. Joginder Kumar.

Govt. Degree College Billawar today concluded the celebration of Anti-drug Addiction Week. Red Ribbon Club of the College organised a function wherein students and staff pledged to live a safe and drug free life. Red Ribbon Week is observed in every October to create awareness among youth against drug abuse.

Dr. Nater Singh Principal, Govt. Degree College Billawar was the chief guest on the ocassion. He revealed in his speech that red ribbon week was celebrated in this college from 23rd of oct to 30th of oct, 2015 to remember Enrique "KiKi" Camarena who was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and sacrificed his life to prevent drugs from the world. He also underlined that Red Ribbon week provides a vehicle for empowering our youth to take a stand for their hopes and dreams through commitment to Drug Free Life.

Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof Yash Paul, Lectt. Sprina Andotra, Dr. Amit Singh, Lectt. Nidhi Jasrotia, Lectt. Rakhi Billawaria were present in the function.

Govt. Degree College Billawar organises Lecture on 'Know AIDS for no AIDS'


Red Ribbon Club of Govt Degree College Billawar organized a lecture on‘Know AIDS for No AIDS’ as part of its AIDS Awareness Campaign. Dr Lakhwinder Singh was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Dr. Nater Singh , Principal Govt. Degree College Billawar presided over the function. Dr Lakhwinder Singh delivered an extensive lecture on the topic. In his lecture , he threw light on the modes of transmission, of AIDS, the window period of HIV virus detection, the lowering of CD4 cells count, the onset of the condition known as AIDS with diminished immunity ,the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) for the control of the HIV and the various laws against discrimination meted out to the HIV infected persons. Dr Nater Singh , principal of the college while speaking on the occasion, focused on the social and psychological aspects of AIDS and exhorted upon the students to spread the message far and wide so that the stigma attached with HIV infection can be eliminated from the society. He also informed the gathering that this lecture is a part of the series of the the programmes like symposia and rallies that shall be organized as part of the AIDS Awareness Campaign. Prof Amit Kumar Sharma compered the whole function and also presented the vote of thanks.

Govt. Degree College Billawar organises Annual Day cum Prize distribution function



Govt. Degree College, Billawar celebrated their Annual Day cum Prize distribution function on 2nd Feb 2015, in a grand manner in the college campus. Prof (Dr.) Nirmal Singh, Hon’ble MLA Billawar, was the chief guest and Sh. Jeevan Lal, Hon’ble MLA Bani, was the guest of honour on the day.

The day began with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, guest of honour and principal of the college. All the dignitaries were given a warm welcome and were honoured by presenting bouquets and shawls of local make.

Principal of the college Dr. Netar Singh presented annual report of college activities held throughout the session. In his speech he thanked all the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time and encouraging the students of Billawar College. He briefed about the various developments which were going on in the college and also highlighted the infrastructural and faculty needs of the college.

On the occasion various cultural activities like Dogri Dance, Patriotic Dance, Rajasthani Dance, Gidda, Semi-Classical, Bhangra were performed by the students. Rajasthani Dance was adjudged the best performance of the event by jury comprising Mrs Mamta Singh, Dr Ram Lal Upadhaya (Ex. UN Advisor) and Sh. Ravinder Mansotra, Exn. JKPCC.

 In his address Dr. Nirmal Singh MLA Billawar congratulated the college for organizing such a wonderful Annual Day cum Prize distribution function and assured all his help for the further development of the college in the form of infrastructural and academic excellence. He also emphasized on the urgent need to stream line the education department which has been in mess for the last decade in the state and urged to bring major attention for the implementation of transparent transfer policy. Dr. Nirmal Singh also released the maiden College Newsletter “Bhini”.

 Mrs. Mamta Singh wife of Dr. Nirmal Singh also expressed her delight on being part of this colorful and meaningful event.

Sh. Jeevan Lal, MLA Bani also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of degree colleges in the far flung area for the educational advancement of the backward areas.

Later the meritorious students including those who have excelled in the field of sports, art and culture were felicitated by presenting mementos and certificates.

Ms. Shriya Mahajan, Ms. Manika Sharma, Ms. Komal Sharma, Ms. Chakshu compeered the whole event. In the end Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma presented the vote of thanks and the program ended with the singing of National Anthem.

Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of Auditorium at GDC- Billawar


Billawar, 19thAug 2014

Govt. Degree College organized a foundation stone laying ceremony in the college campus on 19th Aug, 2014 in which Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma laid the foundation stone of multi-purpose hall / Auditorium. The construction work has been awarded to Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation Ltd. (JKPCC) at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.4 crores. The Multipurpose hall will have VIP Rooms, pantry, stores, staff toilets etc.  with a seating capacity of 750 persons.
Principal, Dr. Netar Singh welcomed and also thanked Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma for the keen interest in the development of college infrastructure and also expressed the urgent need for the expansion of lecturer rooms keeping in the view the increased enrolment of students.
In his address, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma informed the audiences about the plans of the Higher Education department for the development of infrastructure in the colleges. He highlighted the importance of the multipurpose hall which is not only beneficial for the college but equally important to the tehsil administration.
The function was attended by Supdt. Engineer (JKPCC), Mr. N D Khwaja, SDM Billawar, Mr. R S Charak, Tehshildar Billawar, Dr. Manmeet Motan, DFO Billawar, Mr. Mohinder Gupta and other officers of tehsil Billawar along with Sarpanches, panches , prominent citizens and students of the college.

Closing Ceremony of NSS winter camp in GDC Billawar


NSS unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar organized a valedictory function to mark the closing ceremony of 10-day NSS winter camp w.e.f 26.12.2013 to 04.01.2014 During the camp, various activities were performed by NSS volunteers including cleanliness drive in the college campus, Socio economic survey in adopted village Dhaddi, Expert Lecture on Health and Hygiene, symposium on Environmental Protection, AIDS Awareness, Community Service and other cultural activities.
Er. Deep Raj, SDM Billawar was the Chief Guest and Dr. B. L. Gupta, Principal presided over the function. The Program started by presenting an annual report of various activities held throughout the year by Ms. Kajal Lalotra. Principal of College, in his speech underlined the need and importance of NSS training in developing qualities such as character, courage, confidence, comradeship, decision making and leadership. While speaking on the occasion SDM, Billawar appreciated the efforts put forth by the NSS volunteers in mobilizing local human and material resources for meeting the needs of the villages and also for conducting various activities for community development. Prizes and certificates were distributed among the NSS volunteers for various activities during the camp. Ms Kajal Lalotra and Mr. Davinder Singh adjudged as the best female and male NSS volunteers respectively. In the end a vote of thanks was delivered by NSS Program Officer, Snanjeev Gupta. Prof Rakesh Sharma , Prof Joginder Kumar and other staff members along were also present.


 

NSS winter camp in GDC Billawar


A seven days NSS winter camp w.e.f. 26-12-2013 to 02-01-2014 was inaugurated in the college today by Principal Dr. B.L. Gupta. During the camp, various types of NSS activities will be held including cleanliness drive, Shramdaan, Blood donation camp, community service in the adopted village Dhaddi, health awareness programme, village development awareness programme, law and order awareness programme, Debate, symposium for the holistic and overall development of the college students. The program started with NSS song, Pledge and motto of NSS *“Not Me -----But You” and “Happiest people are not those getting more but those giving more”. On this occasion, Kajal Lalotra and Aditi Khajuria spoke about the history of NSS and role of NSS in shaping the personality development of the college students through community service. Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, NSS Program Officer briefed students about the aims and objectives of the NSS and described the detailed schedule of the camp. Dr. B.L. Gupta, Principal of the college also spoke on this occasion. He asked the students to follow the spirit of symbol of NSS which has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India and portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space. The NSS symbol stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change. The eight bars in the wheel represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit.He further stressed the students to follow the broad objectives of NSS in their life like understanding the community in which they work, understanding themselves in relation to their community, identifying the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process, developing among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility, utilizing their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems, developing competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities, gaining skills in mobilizing community participation, acquiring leadership qualities and democratic attitude, developing capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters, practicing national integration and social harmony. In the end, voluntary work diaries were distributed to the NSS students. Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Yash Paul and other staff members along with students were present in the inaugural function.

On the 2nd of the 12th three days (J & K) Open State Amateur Fencing championship being held in Govt. Degree College, Billawar w.e.f. 17th to 19th Nov. 2013, the competitions were held in various categories and the following positions were achieved by Fencers:

A prize distribution function was held in which Er. Deep Raj, SDM Billawar was the Chief Guest and Dr. B. L Gupta Principal of the college presided over the function. In all, the position holders were awarded 6 Golds, 6 Silvers and 11 Bronzes Medals. While speaking on the occasion, SDM Billawar congratulated the participants and thanked the organizers for choosing remote area like Govt. Degree College Billawar for hosting state level championship. The function was attended by large gathering including Govt. Officials, prominent citizens, college and school teachers and students. Mr Ranchan Sabharwal, Mr Chottu Lal and Mr Vishal acted as referee. The vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Chottu Lal, Fencing Coach of J&K Sports Council.

The elections to the student union of Govt. Degree College
Billawar were conducted on 31st October 2013.The students elected 21 Class
Representatives (CRs) in the democratic electoral process conducted under
the overall supervision of Chief Observer, Dr. B.L.Gupta, Principal, GDC
Billawar and Election Observer Prof. Sanjeev Gupta and Election Assistant
Madhvi. Each Class Representative (CR) was elected under the supervision of
a team of one presiding Officer and two Polling officers of teaching staff
members of the college and one male and one female was elected from each
class. Parveen Singh, Shivani Sharma, Manjeet Singh, Manvi Gupta, Rohit

The President later nominated two Executive Members namely Ajay Lakyal,
B.Sc.Part III and Himmat Panotra, B.Sc. Part III to form part of the
Executive Body of the Student Union. The CRs and the governing body of the
student council resolved to work for the betterment of the college and the
student community. Principal and staff congratulated the students for
electing their representative body in smooth and fair manner and hoped that
the student governing council will help the college authorities in solving
the genuine problems of the students.


 

GDC Billawar Organized A 'Tree Talk'


A 'Tree Talk' was organized by Botany Dept. in the premises of the Govt. Degree College, Billawar on 30-10-2013. The main purpose to host the Talk was to familiarize the students and other participants regarding the surrounding trees and other useful plants of nature. Sh. O.P.Sharma, Chief Conservator of the Forests (CCF) was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. B.L.Gupta, the Principal of the college presented the welcome note. The chief guest had an extensive interaction with the participants. He discussed the common uses and general characters of some trees of the area like Sarca indicia (Ashok tree) which is also regarded as Sorrowless tree and believed to get rid of ailments and sorrows of life. Some trees like Holoptelia integrifolia (Chamarakh) and Zanthoxylum alatum (Timbru) can be used to maintain oral hygiene. He also underlined the utility of Murraya koenghhi (Karipatta) as also of Spondias pinnata (Mara), Putranjiva roxburghii, Nyctanthes arbortritis and Erythrinia indica(Coral tree) etc. Sh. Sant Kumar Sharma, senior journalist underlined the great importance of various types of trees prevalent in Billawar area and their medicinal properties. Mohd Saleem, Chief Wildlife Warden and Mr. Vijay Kumar Verma, ACF Kathua were also present on this occasion. The Principal of the college proposed the requirement of a Botanical Garden in the college and introduction of various kinds of plants so as to generate interest among the students for the rich biodiversity of the area. Later on Mr. O .P Sharma made a round of the campus and highlighted the importance of trees planted in the college campus. The event was compered by Vidisha Gupta and Aditi Khajuria.


 

GDC Billawar Organized “Grow with LIC of India”

Career Counseling and Placement Cell of Govt. Degree College, Billawar, in collaboration with LIC Unit - Billawar organized a workshop on “Grow with LIC of India”. The workshop was inaugurated by Principal Dr. B. L. Gupta. He apprised the students about various career opportunities with LIC of India. In this workshop Mr. Paul Chand Hans Branch Manager LIC Billawar threw light on the enormous reach of LIC and its further expansion possibility as far as career opportunities in this field. Mr Pardeep Kumar Development Officer LIC, Billawar explained more through video presentation about the scheme “GROW WITH LIC OF INDIA (ROZGAR KA SUNEHRA MAUKA WITH UNLIMITED INCOME)”. Mr. Anil Kumar Development Officer, LIC Billawar explained how students can associates with largest insurance company of Indian and start earning at very early age along with their studies. He further cited that LIC of India is the only institution which offers unlimited income & multiple benefits in the form of Pension, Gratuity , Commission , Housing loans at concessional rate, office expenses reimbursements, Interest free car, Foreign trips and Opportunities to be Development Officer / CLIA. In the last Mr. Amit Sharma expressed various club rules and also presented the vote of thanks.


 

GDC Billawar Organized Work Shop on "Recent Trends and Development in Physics”

Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized one day Physics workshop on the topic “Recent Trends and Development in Physics”. On this occasion, Prof, P. N Kotru was the chief guest and Prof. Baba V K S Potukuchi was the guest of the honour. Principal Dr. B. L Gupta welcomed the esteemed chief guest and guest of honour by presenting them floral bouquets. The workshop was divided into two sessions-the first included the presentations by the learned guests while the second comprised the power point presentations by the students on various topics.
Prof, P. N Kotru spoke on the Material Engineering and Technology – A Fundamental View. He declared the present age as the age of materials and highlighted the miniaturization of our world due to the advancement in the field of Nanotechnology. He also discussed the life and findings of the great Physicists like Newton and Albert Einstein and urged the students to follow their footsteps by developing an inquisitive attitude towards the nature.
Prof. Baba V K S Potukuchi, through his presentation on the topic “Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) and God Particle: Importance and Discovery” simplified the complex theories of Big Bang and Higgs Boson Particle (also known as GOD PARTICLE). He threw light on the various forces in the nature and the possibility of their unified theory which can revolutionize the modern physics.
In the second session of the workshop, 8 students presented their power point presentations on various relevant topics. Prof, P. N Kotru and Prof. Baba V K S Potukuchi adjudged their performances and declared Rajat Gupta (B.Sc P-III), Ajay Lakyal(B.Sc P-III)and Manisha Bhadwal(BSc P-II) first, second and third rankers respectively. The three position holders were given momentoes while the other participants were given consolation prizes. The Principal honored the guests with momentoes and locally made(Basohli) Shawls. The event was compeered by Komal Sharma and Sohani Sharma.


 

Gandhi Jayanti Celebrated by organizing a symposium on the topic “Mahatma Gandhi

Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by organizing a symposium on the topic “Mahatma Gandhi: An Apostle of Peace and Non Violence” on 01-10-2013. The participating students spoke about the prevalent violence in the society and how Gandhian gospels of truth and non – violence can negate this violence in the society. The performances of the students were adjudged by the jury constituted by Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma and Prof Joginder Kumar on the basis of their presentation, diction, content and pronunciation. Manika Sharma of B.Sc Part II was adjudged as the best speaker while Vidisha Gupta and Kajal Lalotra of B.Sc Part III stood 2nd and 3rd in the symposium. Prof. Sanjeev Gupta presided over the function and threw light on relevance of Gandhian Philosophy of truth and non-violence in the present times and impressed upon the students to read autobiography of Gandhi “My Experiments with Truth” in order to know about Gandhi and his philosophy. The whole programme was compeered by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma.


 

Distribution of Post Matric Scholarship Cheques at Govt. Degree College Billawar.

Govt. Degree College Billawar and Tehsil Social Welfare Office Billawar distributed Post Matric Scholarship cheques of Rs. 217000/-(two lacs seventeen thousand) in favour of 34 ST students of GDC Billawar. The scholarship funds were released by Directorate of Tribal Affairs Jammu (J&K Govt.) under the centrally sponsored scheme "Post Matric Scholarship to ST students “for the year 2012-13 @ Rs. 6300/-(Sixty three hundred) each. On this occasion, Principal Dr. B.L. Gupta and Taro Devi Tehsil Social Wellfare Officer Billawar distributed cheques among the students and exhorted them to avail the scholarship scheme of centre and state and utilize it for improving their academic skills.

  The whole Scholarship process was initiated and processed under the guidance of Prof. Joginder Kumar (convenor scholarship committee). Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma and other staff members were also present in the distribution ceremony.


 

Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated NSS day

The NSS Unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated NSS day on 24th of September, 2013 with great enthusiasm. The program was held under the supervision of Prof Sanjeev Gupta, NSS Programme Officer. The NSS volunteers presented an amalgam of activities to leave the audience spellbound. Activities such as introductory speech, NSS song, patriotic song, poetry recitation etc. remained the main attraction of the programme. Later in the day, the NSS volunteers and the audience pledged to adhere to “NSS Pledge” for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of India regardless of religion, caste, region or language. They further vowed to strengthen their resolve to serve the nation selflessly with dedication.

  On the occasion Mr. Sant Kumar Sharma (Journalist) was the chief guest. He shared his experiences relating to  his journey from school life to the journalism with the fellow participants & inspired them to work with zeal. Ms. Kajal Lalotra and Ms. Aditi Khajuria of B.Sc. Part-III compeered the proceedings. The function was attended by all the teaching and non teaching staff members along with the students of the college.


 

Building Bridges: Cross- Cultural Youth Initiative for Mutual Understanding and Unity in J&K State workshop at Kargil Ladakh

A Felicitation function was held in the Govt. Degree College, Billawar to felicitate the students who participated in 5 day residential workshop on “Building Bridges: Cross- Cultural Youth Initiative for Mutual Understanding and Unity in J&K State” organized by Yakjah : Reconciliation and Development Network, New Delhi at Sankoo, Kargil Ladakh from 1st September to 5th September 2013. The main focus of the workshop was to provide a platform to the students from different regions of J&K to share their cultural, regional, linguistic, religious particularities and the diversity of the J&K state. During the workshop, the students were given an opportunity to visit various historical and cultural sites in Kargil. They were taken to Chamba (Kargil) where second largest statue of Buddha is carved on a hill. Besides, an educational tour was arranged to Garkone, the Aryan Village inhabited by Dropka Tribe, considered to be the original decedents of Aryan race.

The college students interacted with local inhabitants and showed keen interest in their culture, language, customs and topography. Vidisha Gupta, Kanika Sharma, Rukshana Azami, Ajay Lakyal, Himat Panotra, Ankit Radotra of part-III, participated in the Cultural, Debate, Quiz, Symposium, Yoga , meditation  and other activities in the said workshop and also shared their experiences of the Kargil visit. Dr. B. L. Gupta  Principal, distributed the certificates to the students and shared his experiences in Kargil as principal. Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma and Nidhi Jasortia, Lect. In Geography, who accompanied the students were also felicitated.

 

ASER Survey certificate distribution

Govt. Degree College Billawar distributed certificates along honorarium to the 33 students of the college who, conducted Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2013 survey of children in age group of 5-16 years in the villages of chandal, Pandrar, Dhar Mori, Plakh, Forlain, Sandar, Aglidhar, Kishanpur, Plail, Bhoond, Badnota, Baggan etc. of Basholi, Bani, Billawar, barnoti, Lohai and Malhar Blocks., ASER which means impact, assesses children in rural India by using simple tools in reading and basic Airthematics and is the largest annual household survey of children. The report is submitted to the government of India for the upliftment of learning level of children of rural India. A two days training was given to students by Zahoor Ahmed Beigh, Master Trainer, Distt. Coordinator ASER Budgam for the conduct of ASER survey on 13th and 14th Sept. 2013 in the conference hall of the college. In the ASER survey 2013, students  conducted tests of math and English (Basic), literacy and teaching by the parents, household information regarding TV, Computer, Newspaper, Drinking Water facility, Type of House and village information regarding Road, Electricity, Transport, Post Office, Anganbarhi, Crèche, Medical, Bank and other facilities. Dr. B.L. Gupta Principal congratulated the students for conducting the ASER survey 2013 in most efficient manner and exhorted them to spread the literacy to illiterate and uneducated people. Ms Meenakshi Chandan, Lecturer in Sociology assisted students in the said survey. Prof. Rakesh Sharma and Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma were also present in the felicitation and certificate distribution ceremony.

Visit of Minister and Padamshri for the Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna, Sant Acharya Vinoba Bhave

On the eve of 118th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna, Sant Acharya Vinoba Bhave, an eminent Social reformer and an advocate of Non-Violence and Compassion, Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized a function in collaboration with Gandhi Global family in the premises of GDC Billawar. On this occasion, Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma, Hon’ble Minister of State ( Independent Charge) Fisheries, Co-operatives, Printing and Stationary and Elections MOS for Finance & Planning, Hr. Edu. Forests, Env. & Ecology Labour and Transport was the chief Guest whereas Padamshri Awardee Sh. S. P Verma President of Gandhi Global family (J&K) was the Guest of Honour.
A symposium was organized on the topic *“Life and Contribution of Acharya
Vinoba Bhave – a social reformer”* in which Ms. Vidisha Gupta of B.Sc.
Part-III stood first. She was given a cash prize of Rs. 2100 and memento by
the President Gandhi Global family J&K. Also on this occasion Sh Bashir
Ahamed Bhatti and Sh. Om parkash Sharma were awarded with Gandhi Sewa Medal for maintaining communal harmony and following Gandhian philosophy and values in their life. A 12 day campaign from International  Day of Peace  to International  Day of Non -Violence with effect  from 21 September to 02 October  2013 in collaboration with UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan and Gandhi Global family , New Delhi was launched from Govt. Degree College Billawar.
The program started with  Saraswati vandhana and floral tributes to Acharya
Vinoba Bhave . Principal Dr. B. L Gupta presented welcome address and spoke on the life of Acharya Vinoba Bhave in details. He asked the students to follow the footsteps of Acharya ji and adopt non-violence, compassion  and harmony in their life. Sh. S. P Verma  also spoke about the various social work done by Acharya Vinoba Bhave like Sarvodaya Movement and Bhoodan  Movement for ameliorating  the life of poor people living in villages. Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma impressed upon the society to maintain communal harmony which is the great need of hour in today’s time in the whole country. He further exhorted the young minds particularly students to follow the teachings of Acharya Vinoba Bhave. He sanctioned Rs. 5 crore for the construction of Multi Purpose hall in the college and asked the teachers to work dedicatedly and whole heartedly for the betterment of student community.

Billawar members of Gandhi Global family and eminent persons of Billawar
society.
Foundation Stone of Boundary Wall, College Gate and Reception Counter was laid by Dr. Manohar Lal Sharma in the college campus being constructed at a cost of Rs. 41.5 lacs. He also inaugurated two water coolers fitted with aqua guard filters donated by him under Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and Chemistry Gas Room fitted along with LPG gas connection in Chemistry Lab. Trees of various varieties like Chinar, Billan,water brush, Neem etc were planted by chief guest, SDM Billawar, Principal of College. The function was compeered by Kajal Lalotra and Aditti Khajuria who were given Rs 500 each Sh. SP verma on their excellent performance. In the end National Anthem was sung by one and all present in the function.

Teacher's Day Celebrated in GDC, Billawar

Teacher’s day was celebrated in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 5th
September 2013 to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan.  On becoming President of India I 1962, some of his
friends and students requested him to allow them to celebrate his
birthday. In reply, he said “Instead of celebrating my birthday
separately, it would be my privilege if 5th September is observed as
Teacher’s day”. From then onwards, 5th September is observed as
Teacher’s day all across India.

A symposium on the topic ”Role and Importance of Teacher in Students’
Life” was held on this day wherein, 12 students participated. Prof.
(Dr.) Sham Lal Gupta, Former Director Colleges, Higher Education was
the Chief Guest and Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta, Principal of the college,
presided over the function. The entire students spoke about the role,
a teacher has to play in their life to help them achieve their aims
and ambitions of life. Ist and  IInd prize was won by Ms Kajal Lalotra
of B.Sc. Part –III and  Manvi of B.Sc. Part – I respectively. III rd
prize was shared among Aditi Khajuria of B.Sc. Part – III, Pooja of
B.A. Part – II and Manish of B.A. Part – I. The consolation prize was
won by Komal Sharma of B.Sc. Part – II and Shallu Sharma of B.A. Part
– II.   Gifts were also given to the participating students. Prof.
Hitesh Basotra, Prof. Rakesh Sharma and Dr. Sheetal Sharma acted as
jury members. All the college Teachers were felicitated on this
occasion by presenting them gifts as token of their appreciation by
the Principal Dr. B.L. Gupta. Throughout the day, students brought
gifts, wrote poems and messages for their most admired teachers and
senior students acted as teachers. It was a fun- filled activity in
the college.

Dr. B.L. Gupta exhorted upon the teachers to work whole heartedly and
dedicatedly in this noble profession and should serve as beacons of
light to the student community. Dr. Sham Lal Gupta was honored on
teacher’s day for being a gifted and par excellent teacher of
economics and for shaping the destiny of many students, particularly
poor students. He asked the teaching community to remain humble,
honest and helpful to the student community in this noble profession.

Aditi Khajuria.

Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, Prof. Nalini Kohli examines various developmental activities during her Visit to GDC Billawar

Prof. Nalini Kohli, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, today visited Govt. Degree College, Billawar, and took stock of the various developmental projects underway in the said college. Pertinent to mention here that this is the second visit of the worthy director to GDC Billawar this year, the fact that reflects the considerate approach the higher education department has for the fast growing colleges.

Accompanied by Prof. B.L. Gupta, principal of the college, and the staff members, Prof. Kohli first inspected the college premises and inquired about the upcoming project of installation of main gate and boundary wall of the college, the funds for which have already been sanctioned and the construction work expected to ensue soon. She provided valuable information for the landscaping and ground leveling for which the college is expecting the release of funds soon. Prof. Kohli visited the newly constructed blocks of the college and assured to take up the matter of construction of veranda for the canteen, dispensary and the sports block with the higher authorities.

Later in the day, Prof. Nalini Kohli visited the class rooms and the laboratories and inspected the ongoing gas fitting work for chemistry laboratory. She laid emphasis on modernization of science laboratories.

Prof. B.L. Gupta informed Prof. Kohli that the proposal for multipurpose hall worth Rs. 5.15 crores has already been submitted to the higher education department for necessary favourable action. Prof. Gupta also presented a master plan of the college depicting the requirements and additional facilities to be established in light of increasing enrollment with every session. He expressed urgent need of Principal and staff quarters. In addition, he expressed his keen interest in introducing new subjects in the college like Electronics, Music, Home Science, Biotechnology and Functional English.

Prof. Kohli gave a patient hearing to all the demands and assured of all possible help. She interacted with the staff members and advised them to be sincere and duty bound.

NSS Special Camping Programme held at Village Dhaddi, Billawar

In a benevolent act of social service, the NSS Unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar held a 7 days Special Camping Programme at adopted village Dhaddi, falling under Panchayat Dewal, Tehsil Billawar. The said camp commenced on 02-01-2013 and concluded on 08-01-2013. The camp was organized under the supervision of Dr. Mool Raj, NSS program Officer, GDC Billawar. The NSS team comprising of 50 NSS volunteers and Program officer visited the said village on daily basis and organized varied types of awareness programs and lectures. The team made a detailed socio-economic survey of the village and was surprised to know that there is no graduate in the village despite a degree college at a distance of 3 km. The NSS volunteers interacted with the villagers and were apprised of the problems being faced by them. Among the various activities undertaken by the team were cleanliness drives, management of the drains, maintenance of the school premises, medical checkup camps by doctors, awareness drive by BDO office representatives, lectures of common interests including RTI and social issues etc. The team was saddened to know about the high illiteracy rate among the villagers, the unhygienic and shortage of drinking water sources in the absence of hand pumps, scarcity of electricity.

NSS volunteers apprised the villagers about the rampant social evils like drug use, early child marriage, female education, dowry system, superstitions etc., by way of skits, poems, songs, symposium etc. On the valedictory function, SDM Billawar, Dr. Vikas Gupta, acted as Chief Guest, Principal Dr. B.L. Gupta presided over the function and Sarpanch Dewal Sh. Trilochan Singh was the guest of honour. SDM Billawar took stock of the economic and social conditions prevailing there and assured the villagers for their speedy disposal. Principal of the college Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta assured the villagers that village adoption programme will ensure continuity of work vis-à-vis sustained action, evaluation and follow up work. The valedictory function was attended by Panchs of Dewal, large no. of villagers and college staff members and students. The program ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Mool Raj NSS Program officer and lunch.

NSS Camp Organized a NSS Camp Medical Checkup

A medical checkup camp was organized at village Dhaddi, Dewal in Tehsil Billawar on 05-01-2013 by the NSS unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar. Dr. Des Raj (Physician) and Dr. Nidhi (Dental surgeon) acted as resource persons. Nearly 100 villagers including men, women and children were examined by the doctors team. Most of the patients suffering from stomach problems were treated by the doctors. Necessary precautions and medicines were suggested by the visiting team. 50 NSS volunteer students of the college participated in the community work at the said. Village. Pertinent to mention that the village Dhaddi has been adopted by govt. Degree College Billawar and this exercise is part of the 7 days special camping programme. Dr. B.L. Gupta, Principal also visited the camp and addressed the students and villagers about the community service. He asked the students to do the community service with real heart and missionary zeal to the adopted Dhaddi village community. The whole programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Mool Raj NSS Program officer.

GDC Billawar Organized a symposium on Mathematics to Celebrate National Mathematics Day

Government Degree College, Billawar organized a symposium on “Ramanujan and his Contribution in Mathematics” to celebrate National Mathematics Day December 22, 2012. On this occasion. Dr. Vijay Kumar Sharma, from Government Degree College Bishnah was the Guest of Honour, Dr. Chander Shekhar, from Govt. M.A.M. (PG) College Jammu was the Special Invitee, Prof. Shobha Gupta, from Govt. M.A.M. (PG) College Jammu and Prof Ranjeet Singh, from G.G.M. Science College Jammu were the Special Guests. Principal, Govt. Degree College Billawar, Dr. B.L. Gupta presiding over the function and threw the light on the work of Ramanujan in his welcome address.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Chander Shekhar unfolded the basic problems faced by the students in Set Theory, Group Theory and their applications. He urged the students to understand the concepts to meet the study easy and interesting. The participated students spoke and threw light on various topics of Mathematics and their applications in all branches of science including daily life.

The first prize was bagged by Ms. Komal Sharma, student of B.Sc.-I, while second and third prizes were secured by Mr. Rajat Gupta, a student of B.Sc.-II and Ms. Manika Sharma, a student of B.Sc.-I. The jury members were. Prof. Hitesh Basotra, Prof. Ranjeet Singh and Prof. Shobha Gupta, who judged the performance of the participants. The anchoring of program was done by Surbhi Pathania and Anamika Sharma. At the end, Dr. Amit Singh, HOD Mathematics presented vote of thanks.

Village adoption by NSS unit GDC Billawar

NSS unit of GDC Billawar today adopted village Dhaddi falling under panchayat Dewal, Tehsil Billawar. The adoption was undertaken under the supervision of Dr. Mool Raj, NSS program Officer, GDC Billawar. The NSS team comprising of NSS volunteers and Program officer along with principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta, Panchs and Sarpanch of Dewal visited Dhaddi village and took stock of the socio-economic conditions prevailing there. The team interacted with the villagers and was apprised of the problems being faced by the villagers. NSS volunteers assured the villagers of continuous help in whatever way possible.

Principal of the college Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta later addressed the gathering and expressed that it is better to concentrate attention on one village and take up the task for development perspective, than to fritter away energy in many locations involving too many activities which may not be completed at all or where the follow up action may not be possible. Dr.Mool Raj assured the villagers that village adoption programme will ensure continuity of work vis-à-vis sustained action, evaluation and follow up work.

Sarpanch and Panchs of concerned area assured the college staff of any type of possible help needed by the NSS team for the betterment of villagers.

 

GDC, Billawar, Organized a ppt seminar on “Internet and Web Technologies"

 

Deptt. Of Computer Science, GDC, Bilawar organized a seminar on the topic “Internet and Web Technologies”. Total 14 participants presented their power point presentations on the varied dimensions of this topic. The seminar was presided over by the Dr. B. L. Gupta principal of College.
Prof. Joginder Kumar HOD, Dept. of Computer Science delivered the key note of the seminar in which he highlighted the importance and increasing relevance of the “internet and web Technologies” in this age of Information Technology.
The jury members, who adjudicated on basis of Content, presentation style and description were Prof. Sudesh Kumar , Prof. Amit kumar Sharma and Lect. Rakhi Billawaria. The first prize was bagged by Anamika Sharma of B.Sc. part-I, while the 2nd and 3rd prizes were given to Shivalika and Pragya Bharti both students of B.Sc. part-II. Beside this two consolation prizes were also given away to Bhavana Mehra student of B.Sc. part-II and Manisha Badwal of B.Sc part-I.
In the concluding remarks, Dr. B.L. Gupta congratulated the dept. of Computer Science for providing such a platform to the students.

 

"Art of Creative Writing in Youth" by Dr. D.K. Vaid 

 

Govt. Degree College Billawar, in collaboration with Department of Life Long Learning, University of Jammu, organized an Extension Lecture on “Art of creative writing in youth” on 17th of December, 2012. The function was coordinated by Dr. Mool Raj, Department of Urdu. Dr. D.K. Vaid, Ex. Director School Education and Sahitya Academy Awardee, was the invited speaker while principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta presided over the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vaid unfolded the basic prerequisites needed to be a successful writer. He urged the students to give their thoughts a vent in a way so as to reach beyond the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature. He further stressed that creative writing should focus on students’ self-expression unlike its academic counterpart of writing classes that teach students to compose work based on the rules of the language. Dr. Vaid quoted many interesting couplets from his own literary writings and those of some of the great writers of our times.
Principal, Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta expressed happiness over the enthusiasm showed by the students and thanked Dr. Vaid for his kind visit to the college. He urged the students to lay emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes in their writings. He was categorical in his message to the students and encouraged them to get started without worrying about the impending poor response in their initial efforts. In his address, Dr. Gupta appreciated the efforts of Department of Life Long Learning, University of Jammu for taking a lead in organizing such programs in distant colleges of Jammu region.
Ms. Shagun Sharma, Lecturer in English, compered the proceedings while Dr. Mool Raj, program in charge, presented vote of thanks to the dignitaries on behalf of the college and the Department of Life Long Learning, University of Jammu.

 

Inter-Collegiate Wrestling Tournament 

 

Govt. Degree College Billawar, organized a Felicitation Function to felicitate the students who brought laurels to the college in the recently concluded inter-collegiate wrestling tournament organized by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu.  Mr. Mukesh Kumar of B.A Part –III who won the gold medal in below 50kg category, while Sher  Singh , Prem Singh, and Ajay Singh won bronze medal under 55 kg,60kg and 74 kg category respectively. In the function Dr. B.L Gupta principal degree college, Billawar congratulated the winner for their achievements and exhorted the others students to work hard for the inter-Collegiate events to follow.Other faculity members present in the function were , Prof. Hitesh Basotra,Dr. Mool Raj and Prof. Sudesh Kumar(Convener Sports Committee)

 

Aids Day Celebaration

 

The NSS Unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated AIDS Day today to commemorate the World AIDS Day that is celebrated every year on December 1. A rally was organized by the NSS unit of the college under the supervision of Dr. Mool Raj, NSS Program Officer, GDC Billawar. The rally started from the college campus and proceeded towards Billawar city before culminating in the college premises. Principal GDC Billawar, Prof. (Dr.) B. L. Gupta, flaged off the rally.

Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) B. L. Gupta, appreciated the NSS unit and highlighted the importance of celebrating World AIDS Day by stating that World AIDS day celebration brings together people from around the world to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic. Dr. Gupta urged the students to take up the national service in its true spirit and meaning.

Dr. Mool Raj reiterated that such occasions provide opportunity for public and private partners to spread awareness about the status of the pandemic and encourage progress in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in high prevalence countries and around the world.

The rally was attended by the NSS volunteers and the teachers of the college.

Gandhi Jayanti Celeberation

Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by organizing a symposium on the topic “ Relevance of Gandhian Philosophy in the Present Times of Rising Violence” on 1-10-2012. The participating students spoke about the prevalent violence in the society and how Gandhian gospels of truth and non – violence can negate this violence in the society. The performances of the students were adjudged by the jury constituted by Prof. Hitesh Basotra, Prof. Sunita Devi and Prof Sudesh Kumar on the basis of their presentation, diction, content and pronunciation. Ankita of B.A. Part III was adjudged as the best speaker while Divyanshu Goswami and Zahida Tabassum stood 2nd and 3rd in the symposium. Consolation prizes were also given to the participating students. Dr. B.L.Gupta, Principal presided over the function and threw light on relevance of Gandhian Philosophy of truth and non-violence in the present times and impressed upon the students to read autobiography of Gandhi “My Experiments with Truth” in order to know about Gandhi and his philosophy. The whole programme was compeered by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma.

RTI AWARENESS PROGRAM

Kathua, 28/Sep/2012 : Government Degree College Bilawar in collaboration with the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu organized an awareness program on the topic "Citizenship and RTI Act in J & K".
Dr. BL Gupta, Principal of the college inaugurated the program with welcome address. Dr. Gupta while speaking on the occasion asked the college students to exercise their constitutional rights and especially the right to information for various welfare purposes of their society.
The program is initiated by Dr. Sandeep Singh ,Project Officer from Department of Lifelong Learning, university of Jammu, where he highlighted the importance of understanding the value of citizenship in the context of right to information . The project officer informed the students that the people are taking maximum benefit of this transparency law, elsewhere in the country and there is need to further strengthen this act at grass root level.
The key speaker in the program , RTI Activist Raman Sharma thoroughly explained various provisions and sections of the RTI Act -2009 of J&K. While interacting with the students he said "Everyone in the society pay taxes thus has the right to know where this money is being utilized".
Raman Sharma highlighted section 4 of the Jammu and Kashmir Right to Information Act 2009, which puts onus on the Public Authorities to suo-moto disclose information to public. He said, most of the problems and grievances of the rural population can be resolved with the information and it further develops a process of good governance and brings transparency in the over all system. Besides students, the program is attended by Dr. Mul Raj, Prof. Sudesh Kumar, Prof. Hitesh Basotra and Amit Kumar Sharma e.t.c

N.S.S. Day Celebration

The NSS Unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated NSS day on 24th of September, 2012 with great enthusiasm. The program was held under the supervision of Dr. Mool Raj, NSS Program Officer while Prof. (Dr.) B. L. Gupta, Principal, presided over the function.
The NSS volunteers presented an amalgam of activities to leave the audience spellbound. Activities such as introductory speech, NSS song, patriotic song, poetry recitation etc. remained the main attractions of the program. Later in the day, the NSS volunteers and the audience pledged to adhere to “NSS Pledge” for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of India regardless of caste, region, religion or language and vowed to strengthen their resolve to serve the nation selflessly and dedicatedly. Ms. Kajal Lalotra and Ms. Aditi Khajuria of B.Sc. Part-II compered the proceedings.
On this occasion certificates of Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2012, were distributed along with honorarium to 26 NSS Volunteers who conducted survey of children in age group of 5-16 years in the villages Kishenpur, Palail, Baggan, Hottar, Duggar, Macheddi, Bani etc. of tehsil Billawar and Basholi. ASER which means impact, assesses children in rural India by using simple tools in reading and basic Airthematics. The report is submitted to the government of India for the upliftment of learning level of children of rural India.
National summer Mega Camp certificates were also given to Mr. Chaman Lal, President of the student union of college and Ms. Jeevan Jyoti for their participation in the said camp at Andhra University, Vishakhapattanam.
Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) B. L. Gupta, appreciated the NSS unit and summed up the proceedings by reiterating the essence and the importance of celebrating NSS Day and urged the students to take up the national service in its true spirit and meaning. The function was attended by all the teaching and non teaching staff members along with NSS Volunteers and students of the college.

Declamation Contest

Govt. Degree College Billawar organized a Declamation Contest on topics Un-Employment: Cause of Social Recession, Economic Development and Environmental Implication, Use of Non-Conventional Energy Resources for sustainable Economic Development, Social Networking: Boon or Bane, Student Counselling: Road to Success on 12-09-2012. On this occasion, Dr. Vikas Gupta SDM Billawar was the Chief Guest and Sh. Sudesh Kumar Gupta, Chief Engineer (MES) was the Guest of Honour. Thirteen participants took part in the contest. The Jury members, namely Sh. N.S.Jasrotia DFO, Billawar, Prof. Hitesh Basotra and Prof Amit Kumar Sharma adjudged the performance of the participants. The first prize was bagged by Rukshana Azmi, student of B.A Part-II, while second and third prize were secured by Manika Sharma a student of B.Sc.Part-I and Rajat Sharma, a student of B.Sc Part-II respectively. The participated students spoke eloquently and threw light on various topics of social, ecological, economical and environmental problems affecting the society and their remedial measures. The Chief Guest SDM, Billawar also addressed the students and asked to make judicious use of their time and energy. He stressed that the student community should work hard to achieve their ambitions in life and remain focused in achieving it. The Guest of honour Mr.Sudesh Kumar Gupta said that the only key to success is hard work and students should work hard in this direction. Principal Dr. B.L.Gupta, threw light on the burning problems of un-employments, Environmental issues and social networking. He asked the teaching faculty for proper and effective counseling to the students so that they can achieve success in their life. SDM Billawar was also felicitated on his maiden visit to the College. The anchoring of program was done by Miss. Surbhi Pathania and Miss. Divyanshyu Goswami. The program ended with vote of thanks by Prof. Sunita Devi.

Teacher's Day Celebration

Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated Teachers’ Day today on 5th September, 2012 in the college campus. The function was organised to commemorate the birthday of the great philosopher and educationist Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan after whom this day is being celebrated after 1962.

On this occasion, Principal, Dr. B.L. Gupta, addressed the students and apprised them of the great qualities that are intrinsic to a good teacher. He cited the examples of various great educationists who have contributed in the development of this great nation. He highlighted the contributions of Dr. Radhakrishnan in improving the standards of education system in India. Dr. Gupta called upon the teachers of the college to emphasise upon the importance of stronger teacher student relationship.

A number of students from different streams expressed their views on role, status and responsibilities of teachers. The function culminated with distribution of gifts to the teachers by the principal.

Plantation Drive

National Social Service (NSS) unit of Govt. Degree College Billawar, organized a plantation drive in the college premises. Different varieties of plants including Amla, kachnar, Amaltas, Waterbrush, Reetha, Berha, Arjuna, etc. supplied by forest department were planted in the college campus by NSS volunteers, staff and officials of forest department. An interactive session was held after the plantation drive in which, light was thrown on the importance of trees. DFO Billawar Sh. N.S. Jasrotia was the chief guest on this occasion. He apprised the students of benefits and medicinal value of different varieties of plants and their role in making a cleaner, greener, environmental and pollution free environment. Forest Rangers Mr. Nazir Ahmed and Mr. Raina were also present on this occasion. Principal of the college Prof. (Dr.) B.L. Gupta launched the plantation drive by planting a sapling in the campus. He called upon the students to plant at least adopt one tree in the college campus and contribute their bit in making a greener college campus. Dr. Mool Raj, NSS Programme Officer, compered and organized the whole programme. Chaman Lal, astudent of Part-III also spoke on this occasion and shared his experiences of National mega Camp held at Vishakhapatnam. Prof. Hitesh Basotra, Prof. Sudesh , Prof. Yash Paul along with other NSS Volunteers also participated in the plantation drive.
