Govt. Degree College, Billawar celebrated National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, a Nobel Prize winning discovery by Sir C.V. Raman on 28th of February 1928. A symposium on the topic “Scientific Temper is the pre-requisite for the Development of the Country” was organized in which a large no of students participated. Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, principal of the college was the chief guest on the occasion. The participating threw light on the importance of developing scientific attitude at personal, social, political and economic levels for development of the country. Their performances were adjudged by a three member jury comprising of lect. Sushmita Thakur, lect. Narayan Singh, lect. Milley Billoworia on the basis of content, pronunciation and diction. Ms. Arti, Mohd. Bilal and Ms. Deepika all of sem-II, stood first, second and third respectively. The chief guest, while speaking on the occasion emphasized upon the students to develop scientific temper from this stage only as the attitude developed during student age shall remain with you forever. He also bestowed the mementos to the winner. The whole event was organized by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma. Prof. Gurdayal, Prof. Yash Paul and Prof Joginder Kumar were also present on the occasion.
Inauguration of the newly developed Smart Class Room
Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized inauguration function to inaugurate the newly developed Smart Class Room with a sitting capacity of 80 persons on 11-05-2015. Dy. Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh was the chief guest and Smt. Mamta Singh was the guest of honour on the occasion. The Smart Class Room was inaugurated by Dr. Nirmal Singh by cutting the ribbon. The smart Class Room is equipped with Computer System, ceiling Projector, Interactive Whiteboard along with paneled walls, tiled floor, curtained windows and sound system for the entire Room. Principal of the college Dr. Netar Singh welcomed the esteemed guests and briefed the guests with power point presentation about the profile of the college, recently added infrastructure in the college, various development works going on in the college and urgent requirements in the college. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Nirmal Singh appreciated and congratulated the college administration for providing an ambiance and technology of 21st century for students of far flung area. He also assured all his help for the construction of hostels for students hailing from the higher reaches of Hills in Billawar region, for construction of principal and staff quarters, introducing new post graduate courses..In the end Dr. Nater Singh presented memento to the Dy CM. Slogan Writing Competition on AIDS Awareness
Red Ribbon Club of Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized a Slogan Writing Competition as part of its AIDS Awareness Campaign. On this occasion, Principal of the College, Prof (Dr) Nater Singh was the Chief Guest. Nearly 25 participants who participated in this competition wrote slogans on AIDS prevention, against discrimination associated with AIDS, AIDS Awareness, etc. The content and theme of slogans were adjudged by a jury comprising Prof Sanjeev Gupta, Prof Joginder Kumar, Lect. Arti Sharma, Lect. Jatinder Kaur and Lect. Pallavi Khajuria and three of them were adjudged best. The slogans written by Shreya Mahajan, Lovish Himansuh and Sahil Pathik were adjudged first, second and third respectively and were presented with mementos. Speaking on the occasion the Principal appreciated the efforts of the Red Ribbon Club Committee of the college for continuously organizing such events which not only provide awareness among the students but also bring competitive attitude in them. He also exhorted the student to spread all possible awareness and knowledge in their surroundings regarding the AIDS. All the participants were given refreshment. In the end Prof. Sanjeev Gupta presented the vote of thanks.
GDC Billawar organized workshop on "Career Prospects in Civil Services"
Career counseling cell of the Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized one workshop on “Career Prospects in Civil Services” in which thesildar Billawar Dr. Manmeet Kumar and BDO Lohai Malhar Er. Ankush Hans were the expert speakers. The workshop was presided over by Principal, Dr. Netar Singh.
Er. Ankush Hans briefed the students about the pattern of the Union Civil Services (IAS, IPS, IFoS, IRS etc.) examinations conducted by Union Public Service Commission. He dwelt extensively on the selection of optional, areas of focus and marks distribution in all the three stages (Preliminary, Mains and Interview) and spelt out the importance of reading news papers, watching and listening qualitative news.
Dr. Manmeet Kumar Mottan focused mainly on KAS examination conducted by Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission. He stressed upon the students about the importance of writing skills in the Mains stage of the examination and advised them to be honest while facing the final interview stage.
Principal of the college also spoke on the occasion and in his lecture he motivated the students to think higher in their life as they have all the qualities (sincerity, honesty and determination) but only thing they need is the guidance and exposure. He appreciated the efforts of Career Counseling Cell of the college for conducting such workshops as shall help the aspiring students to achieve their cherished dreams. The whole program was coordinated by prof. Amit Kumar Sharma , Prof. Joginder Kumar and prof Yash Paul.

Felicitation function for the students who bought laurels to the College
A Felicitation function was held in the Govt. Degree College, Billawar to felicitate the students who brought laurels to the college in recently concluded inter–college athletics meet organised by the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education University of Jammu, Jammu. A total of 24 students including 17 male and 7 female participated in the meet. Mr Ankit Sharma of BSc. Part- III bagged two medals, one gold and one bronze in the 100 and 200 mtr. respectively. He also broke the earlier university record of 100 mtr. by accomplishing it in 11 sec. Both Mr. Narinder Sharma of BSc. Part-I and Ms. Pooja Sharma of BA Part-I bagged bronze medal in 10 km and 1.5 km race respectively. Dr. Netar Singh principal of the college congratulated the winners and physical coordinator of the college Mr. Mukesh Sharma for their achievements.
“Legal Awareness Programme” organized for the students.
Govt. Degree College, Billawar in collaboration with Legal Services Committee, Billawar organized a “Legal Awareness Programme” for the students of the college. Dr. Netar Singh, Principal of the college was the chief guest and Advocate Jatinder Singh Bhadwal was the chief speaker on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Jatinder Singh Bhadwal threw light on various legal aspects such as fundamental rights of the citizens, Right to Information Act, Environmental Laws, Public Services Guarantee Act, Domestic Violence Act, etc.
In his address to the students, Dr. Netar Singh exhorted them to know and use the existing laws for the betterment of the society. The program was coordinated by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma and Prof. Joginder Kumar. Ms. Shreya Mahajan compeered the whole event.

Career Counseling Cell of Govt. Degree College Billawar organized an interactive session on “Career Prospects Through / in Banking Sector” on 11th Feb 2015. Mr. Vinay Gupta, Bank Manager J&K Bank was the chief speaker on the occasion and Dr. Netar Singh, Principal of the college presided over the function.
Mr. Vinay Gupta in his lecture explained to the students that how the banking sector provides a wealth of opportunities for experienced professionals, college graduates and entry-level workers. He briefed the students about various types of loans available for the students for pursuing higher education, opening their own business etc. He also threw light on the IBPS exam and guided the students about the pattern of the exam, books for preparation.
Dr. Netar Singh in his speech emphasized upon the students to take advantages of various loans offered by the banks and assured them of all help if they want to prepare for various bank exams. He also appreciated the efforts of the College Career Counseling Cell and advised them to conduct more such events for the awareness and career advancements of the students.
A large no of students and staff members attended the lecture. In the end refreshment was given to all the participants. Prof Amit Kumar Sharma, compeered the whole event.
Govt. Degree College Billawar organises Annual Day cum Prize distribution function
Govt. Degree College, Billawar celebrated their Annual Day cum Prize distribution function on 2nd Feb 2015, in a grand manner in the college campus. Prof (Dr.) Nirmal Singh, Hon’ble MLA Billawar, was the chief guest and Sh. Jeevan Lal, Hon’ble MLA Bani, was the guest of honour on the day.
The day began with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, guest of honour and principal of the college. All the dignitaries were given a warm welcome and were honoured by presenting bouquets and shawls of local make.
Principal of the college Dr. Netar Singh presented annual report of college activities held throughout the session. In his speech he thanked all the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time and encouraging the students of Billawar College. He briefed about the various developments which were going on in the college and also highlighted the infrastructural and faculty needs of the college.
On the occasion various cultural activities like Dogri Dance, Patriotic Dance, Rajasthani Dance, Gidda, Semi-Classical, Bhangra were performed by the students. Rajasthani Dance was adjudged the best performance of the event by jury comprising Mrs Mamta Singh, Dr Ram Lal Upadhaya (Ex. UN Advisor) and Sh. Ravinder Mansotra, Exn. JKPCC.
In his address Dr. Nirmal Singh MLA Billawar congratulated the college for organizing such a wonderful Annual Day cum Prize distribution function and assured all his help for the further development of the college in the form of infrastructural and academic excellence. He also emphasized on the urgent need to stream line the education department which has been in mess for the last decade in the state and urged to bring major attention for the implementation of transparent transfer policy. Dr. Nirmal Singh also released the maiden College Newsletter “Bhini”.
Mrs. Mamta Singh wife of Dr. Nirmal Singh also expressed her delight on being part of this colorful and meaningful event.
Sh. Jeevan Lal, MLA Bani also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the importance of degree colleges in the far flung area for the educational advancement of the backward areas.
Later the meritorious students including those who have excelled in the field of sports, art and culture were felicitated by presenting mementos and certificates.

10 Jan. 15,Govt. Degree College, Billawar celebrated Lohri festival in the college campus on 10-01-2015. The celebration started by gathering around bonfires, throwing sweets, puffed rice, and popcorn into the flames by chanting of mantras. After offering prayers, Peanuts, Rewri, flour and various food items were distributed among every one present on the occasion. Large number of Students and teachers performed dance. In the end Principal Dr.Netar Singh addressed the students by wishing them happy Lohri and exhorted upon the student to work hard in their studies. Prof. Satishwer Singh, Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Yash Paul, Prof. Joginder Kumar and other staff members including large number of students were present in this celebration of Lohri Festival.

Govt. Degree College Billawar in collaboration with tehsil administration organized a “Signature Campaign” under the SVEEP program, an initiative to educate and aware the youth about the value of casting their vote.
Dr. R S Charak, SDM Billawar was the chief guest and Dr. Manmeet Mottan, Tehsildar Billawar was the guest of honor on the occasion.
Dr. Charak in his address to the students underlined the significance and importance of the vote to strengthen the democracy. He also congratulated all those students who have been recently registered in the electoral roll of their respective constituencies and will feel the power of exercising their valuable vote in the ensuing Assembly Election.
Dr. Netar Singh, Principal of the college presided over the function and apprised the students about understanding the value of their vote and urged them for greater participation and further spreading the message in their vicinity about the value and importance of voting.

Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by organizing a symposium on the topic “Earth has enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed” on 01-10-2014.In all, Six students participated in the symposium and expressed their views on the Gandhian views on living in harmony with the nature. The performances of the students were adjudged by the jury constituted of Prof. Satishwar Singh, Ms. Reetika Sharma and Ms. Rinki Sharma, on the basis of their presentation, diction, content and pronunciation. Shreya Gupta of Semester-I was adjudged as the best speaker while Yasmine Ali Khan and Khema Bharti stood 2nd and 3rd in the symposium. Dr. Nater Singh, Principal of the college presided over the function and threw light on relevance of Gandhian Philosophy on the protection of the environment while fulfilling the needs of the humanity. He expressed his concern on the increasing consumerism leading to the unsustainable life style that is causing huge damage to the environment and depriving many of their due from nature. He further emphasized upon the students to imbibe the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in their life so that environment remains protected as we develop. The whole programme was compeered by Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma. The other participants were given consolation prizes for their participation in the symposium.

Govt. Degree College Billawar organized one day plantation drive in the college campus on 26 August, 2014. Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary (IAS) was the chief guest on the occasion. College NSS students and staff planted saplings of various trees like Alstonia, Glacous cassia, Pterospermum, Australian Acacia, Bottle-brush, Lagerstroemia etc.
DC, Kathua appreciated the efforts of the college in organizing such an event to safeguard the environment and enriching the college campus with a variety of trees.

Dr. Tariq Ahmed Kawoos, Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, J&K Govt. visited Govt. Degree College Billawar along with Mr. Ravi Gupta, Divisional Manager, Project Monitoring Committee(PMC), Higher Education Department in order to review the ongoing projects and the infrastructure of the college. They also took stock of the issues concerning boundary wall and land of the college by meeting with concerned people whose land has been acquired for the opening of the Govt. Degree College Billawar. The Director Colleges inspected the Laboratories, Library, Canteen, Dispensary and Health/Sports Block, Play Grounds, Examination Centers, the Ongoing Construction work of Boundary Wall, Main Gate, Reception Counter and Multipurpose Hall. Later on, he held a meeting with teaching and non- teaching staff in the Conference Hall. Dr. B.L. Gupta, Principal of the College welcomed the guests with floral bouquets and presented the college Profile and various activities of the college during session 2013-14 through Power Point Presentation (ppt.). Mementoes were also presented to the guests as a token love and respect for their maiden visit to the college. The programme was compeered by Prof Amit Kumar Sharma and vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Sanjeev Kumar Gupta. The Director Colleges appreciated the initiative taken in upgrading the physical infrastructure and technological up gradation of the college. He was highly impressed by the campus of the GDC Billawar and congratulated the team of staff for the upkeep of such a beautiful campus of higher learning in this far flung hilly area of Billawar under the dynamic leadership of Dr. B.L. Gupta, Principal. Pertinent to mention that GDC Billawar is funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), New Delhi and was affiliated with UGC under section 2(f) and 12B in the year 2007 for receiving central assistance.

National Science Day was celebrated in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 28 February 2014. The programme started with lighting of Lamp by Chief Guest, SDM Billawar Dr. R.S Charak, Guest of Honour, Tehsildar Billawar Dr. Manmeet Kumar and Dr. B.L Gupta, Principal of the College. The welcome address was presented by Principal Dr. B.L Gupta and addressed the august gathering about the importance of National Science Day and the contribution of Sir C. V. Raman in the field of science and the path-breaking discovery of Raman Effect which led to the winning of Nobel Prize in 1930. The theme of this year National Science Day was selected as fostering Scientific Temper which is very relevant in 21st century and affects every aspects of human endeavor from ethics to politics. Scientific Temper is just not joining science course and talking about science and technology but is an attitude of inquisitive mind of what, how and why. On this occasion 7 students of the college presented their ideas on various topics like “Energy Conservation”, “Importance of Chemistry”, “Detectors and their Applications”, and “Bhopal Gas Tragedy” through power point presentation. Their performance were adjudged by Prof Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Rakesh Sharma and Prof. Amit Kumar Sharma on the basis of Content, Language and Presentation Style and Mr. Himmat Panotra of BSc. part-III stood first and Ms. Pooja Rani and Ms. Sapna Verma both students of BSc part-II secured 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
To grace the occasion Dr. Manmeet Kumar stressed upon the students to develop scientific attitude and shun the superstitious among their self and people around them. Dr. R.S Charak also spoke on the occasion and appreciated the college administration for organizing such events for infusing scientific temper among the students.

Farewell Party in GDC Billawar
A farewell party was organized in the Govt. Degree College, Billawar to the outgoing students of Part-III on 20-02-2014 by the college students. Dr. B.L.Gupta, Principal of the College graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Dr. Manmeet Kumar, Tehsildar Billawar, was the Guest of the Honour and Dr. Ram L Upadhyay, former UN Advisor was the special Guest. The programme started with lighting of lamp by dignitaries and welcome address was read by Ms Manika Sharma of BSc Part-II. Various games like Best Mr and Ms Khaau , Best Mr. and Ms Dancer, Best Mr and Ms Entertainer, Best Mr and Ms Perfect and Best Mr Saari Wrapper and Ms Neck Tie Knotter were held and prizes were given to the winners. Various cultural programmes like Bhangra, Folk Dance, Gidda, Solo Break Dance and songs were presented by students. Rajat Gupta and Vidisha Gupta were adjudged Mr and Ms GDC Billawar and were given robe of Honour. Dr Ram L Upadayay gave Rs 1000 to the students for organizing such a wonderful party. He spoke and highlighted the talent of students of this area and wished them well for the success in their future life. Dr. Manmeet Kumar, Tehsildar Billawar also spoke on the occasion and congratulated the students for organizing farewell party for the seniors which is a cery healthy tradition for the students. He further stressed that they should work hard to achieve their aims in life. Dr. B L Gupta gave Rs 500 each to Rukshana Azami, Manish, and Sahil of Part-III students for their dance performance. He also addressed the students and emphasized that the world is open to them and they should explore every possibility for their future life. 34 Candidates Selected Under Project UDAAN in recent Concluded Placement Drive at GDC, Billawar.
Under Project UDAAN by Government of India, Future Group in partnership with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) selected 34 candidates as “Retail Management” and “Legal Assistant” of tehsil Billawar, the written test and interview of which were held on 30th and 31st of Jan 2014 in Govt. Degree College Billawar. Sixteen (16) candidates were selected as “Legal Assistant” whereas eighteen (18) candidates were selected as “Retail Management”. A stipend of Rs. 2500/- per month will be paid to these selected candidates during training period along with free boarding, lodging and meals. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs in companies like Future Group, Vishal Mega Mart, Reliance, Aircel, Districts Legal Authorities (Maharashtra), Pigeon industry etc. Principal, Dr. B.L Gupta congratulated the selected candidates and thanked FUTURE Group team for choosing Govt. Degree College Billawar as the venue for placement drive for the second time and providing employment opportunity to unemployed youth of tehsil Billawar under UDAAN project. The whole program was coordinated under the able guidance of Prof. Joginder Kumar Convener, College Placement Cell along with other team members Dr. Amit Singh, Mr Rahul Sharma, and Ms. Nidhi Jasrotia.
Placement Drive Under Project Udaan in Govt. Degree College Billawar
A placement drive under Project UDAAN by Government of India was held in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 21-01-2014. UDAAN is a unique partnership between Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) & National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for the youth of J&K. Under this partnership IL&FS is providing a specialized 3 months 'Certificate Program in Business Process Associate. A stipend of Rs. 2500/- per month will be paid during training period along with free boarding, lodging and meals. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs as Business Process Associate in GENPACT (Noida), with a minimum salary of Rs. 1.40 – Rs.5 Lakh per annum. More than 120 candidates participated in the said drive. The aspirants were shortlisted through direct interview. This is the Second time that such a placement drive is held in tehsil Billawar under project UDAAN Principal, Dr. B.L Gupta addressed the aspirant to avail this opportunity with zeal, dedication and sincerity and wish them all the best for their future career. He also thanked the Govt. initiated UDAAN project and IL&FS team members Abhimanyu, Rajesh & Vikas for choosing venue of Govt. Degree College for conducting placement drive. The whole program was organized by college placement team in association with IL&FS team members. Convener, College Placement Cell Prof. Joginder Kumar, along with Other team members assisted the team for the selection drive of UDAAN.

A meeting of the teaching staff and the presidium of the College Students Union including all the Class Representatives (CRs) was convened by the Principal of the Govt. Degree College, Billawar to ascertain the smooth functioning of the college and to chalk out various cultural, academic and developmental activities. Celebration of Annual Day Function, Repairs of the class Rooms, Disbursement of the Scholarship to the students, Progress of syllabus completed, Handover of newly constructed sports block, College Canteen and Dispensary, Need of speed Breaker at College Bus Stop, Internal and External Practicals, 2nd Internal Assessment Test, Annual University Examinations, Farewell party, staff picnic etc. were discussed in detail. Principal, Dr. B. L Gupta assured the students that necessary action would be taken to fulfill these aspirations. Vishwashthali is a social and cultural organization which was established in 1993 in Basohli and is awakening the society about the ideas and work of Swami Vivekananda in the field of social and cultural among students and youth. Expert Lecture on the topic “Yoga and Health” by Dr. K.C. Sharma
Govt. Degree College Billawar organized an expert lecture on the topic “Yoga and Health” by the renowned surgeon and social activist Dr. K.C. Sharma on 9th Jan. 2014. Principal, Dr. B. L. Gupta presided over the function. He introduced and welcomed the esteemed guests, Dr K.C.Sharma (renowned surgeon and social activist), Dr Ram Lal Upadhaya (Ex. UN Advisor), and Mr. Suneel Upadhaya (IT Professional from US).
Dr. K.C. Sharma explained how yoga is linked with the physical, Social and mental health. Yoga is an activity that increases flexibility, strengthens muscles, centers thoughts process, relaxes and calms and keep us fit physically, socially and mentally. It is cheapest, not much time consuming, no special infrastructure required and can be done anywhere any time and it is universally adopted. Dr. Ram Lal Upadhaya and Mr Suneel Upadhaya also spoke on the occasion. Both talked extensively about the education system in America, Europe and India and exhorted the students to adopt punctuality, honesty and work culture in their daily life and Yoga can be of immense help in this direction.

13 candidates selected under Project UDAAN in GDC Billawar
Under Project UDAAN by Government of India, Future Group in partnership with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) selected 13 candidates as “Retail Executive”, “Legal Assistant” and “4G Customer Services Executive” of tehsil Billawar, the written test and interview of which was held in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 20-12-2013. Seven (07) candidates namely, Sushil Kumar, Preeti Sapolia, Nitesh Sharma, Mohd. Hafeez, Gulshan Kumar and Bhushan Kumar were selected as Retail Management whereas four (04) candidates Arjun Biloria, Anu Sharma, Nitesh Ratanpal and Isha Sharma were selected under 4G service and two (02) candidates Raj Paul and Balwant Singh were selected as Legal Assistant. These selected candidates will undergo 04 months training w.e.f. 05-01-2014 for 4G services and 13-01-2014 for Retail Management and Legal Assistant at Plot No. 113 sector 44 Gurgaon and 101 A Maniktala,Main Road, Kolkata respectively. A stipend of Rs. 2500/- per month will be paid to these selected candidates during training period along with free boarding, lodging and meals. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs as companies like Future Group, Vishal Mega Mart, Reliance, Aircel, Districts Legal Authorities (Maharashtra), Pigeon industry etc. Principal, Dr. B.L Gupta congratulated the selected candidates and thanked FUTURE Group team for their visit in GDC Billawar for providing employment opportunity to unemployed youth of tehsil Billawar under UDAAN project. National Mathematics Day In GDC Billawar
Department of Mathematics, Govt. Degree College Billawar celebrated National Mathematics Day by organizing a symposium on the topic “Recent Advancements in Mathematics and its Applications”. December 22 had been declared as the National Mathematics Day by Prime Minister of India, during the inaugural ceremony of the celebrations to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan held at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium on 26 February 2012.
Er. Deep Raj, SDM Billawar, Chief Guest of the function inaugurated the symposium by lighting the lamp. Dr. Darshana J. Prajapati, Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics, MBICT, New Valabh, Vidyanagar, Gujarat was the Guest of Honour. The Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 and died on 26 April 1920. It was in recognition of his contribution to mathematics the Government of India decided to celebrate Ramanujan's birthday as the National Mathematics Day and 2013 has been declared by International Mathematical Union (IMU) as “MATHEMATICS OF THE PLANET EARTH”. Prof. B.L. Gupta, Principal, Govt. Degree College Billawar welcomed all the guests and threw light on the work of Ramanujan and asked the students to get inspiration from him and his work and gave the brief introduction of the function. Dr. Darshana J. Prajapati delivered an expert talk on topic “Linear Algebra and its Applications”.
She explained the applications of Linear Algebra in Fractal Theory which is the latest research area in Mathematics. She also stressed that we should know where and how we use mathematics like in Industries, Daily Life and other fields. The expert talk was followed by eight presentations by the students on different and interesting fields of mathematics. First prize was bagged by Shabnam Akhter, B.Sc.-III, Second prized was bagged by Ajay Singh, B.Sc.-III and third prized was bagged by Manvi Gupta, B.Sc.-I on their Power point presentations on the topics “Role of Mathematics Against Terrorism”, “Importance of Ancient and Vedic Mathematics” and “Connections Between Math and Music” respectively. Prof. Shobha Gupta, Prof. Isha Gupta and Dr. Darshana Prajapati were acted as judges. Prof. Sanjeev Gupta, Prof. Rakesh Sharma, Prof. Yash Paul and other staff members were present. Dr. Amit Singh, HOD Mathematics, presented vote of thanks to all those who contributed in one way or the other to make this symposium a success.
Placement Drive Under Project Udaan organized in Govt. Degree College Billawar
A placement drive under Project UDAAN by Government of India was held in Govt. Degree College Billawar on 20-12-2013. UDAAN is a unique partnership between Future Group & National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for the youth of J&K. Under this partnership Future Group is providing a specialized 4 months 'Certificate Program in ‘Retail Management' / ’Legal Assistant’ / ‘4G Customer Service’. A stipend of Rs. 2500/- per month will be paid during training period along with free boarding, lodging and meals. After successful completion of the program, candidates would be provided with an opportunity to take up jobs as “Retail Executive”, “Legal Assistant” and “4G Customer Services Executive” in companies like Future Group, Vishal Mega Mart, Reliance, Aircel, Districts Legal Authorities (Maharashtra), Pigeon industry etc. with a minimum salary of 1.8 lacs p.a. /2.04 lacs p.a. / 1.8 lacs p.a. respectively. More than 120 candidates participated in the said drive. The aspirants were made to appear in a written test of Objective Type Questions in English, Math, Logical Reasoning, General Awareness and Legal Awareness followed by Group discussion and interview. This is the first time that such a placement drive is held in tehsil Billawar under UDAAN Project. Principal, Dr. B.L Gupta addressed the aspirant to avail this opportunity with zeal, dedication and sincerity and wish them all the best for their future career. He also thanked the Future Group team members for choosing venue of Govt. Degree College for conducting placement drive.

Billawar College organizes Quiz on Human Rights
Billawar, December 10:
Department Of Political Science, Government Degree College, Billawar, organized a Quiz on Human Rights on the occasion of the Human Rights Day. Six teams comprising three students each, drawn from 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year, participated in this quiz.
The quiz was structured in three rounds and Multiple Choice type questions, True/False type questions and Single statement questions were asked. The questions were asked from themes that included the Magna Carta of 1215, Bill of Rights of England, Declaration of rights of the Man and the Citizens (France), American Bill of Rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and Fundamental Rights in the Indian constitution.
In all, 18 students participated in the quiz and to encourage participation in future, all of them were given prizes. The winning teams were ranked first, second and third, respectively. They were given trophies by the worthy principal Dr B L Gupta.
Team F comprising Sanjiv Kumar (Part III), Razia Begum (Part II) and Manisha (Part I) won the first position. Team D and Team A stood second and third in the quiz competition.
In his speech, Dr Gupta said that human rights are so vital that students from all streams, whether science or humanities, should be aware about them. He lauded the faculty members, Mr Amit Kumar Sharma and Mr Joginder Kumar, for organising the quiz and the power point presentation.
Sh. Sant Kumar Sharma, senior journalist, was Chief Guest on the occasion and Dr. B.L.Gupta, Principal of the college, presided over the function. The quiz was conducted by Mr Amit Kumar Sharma, Assistant Professor, in Political Science.
12th State open Fencing Championship at GDC Billawar
Three days 12th Open State Fencing championship w.e.f. 17th to 19th Nov.
2013 was inaugurated by Dr. B.L. Gupta, Principal of the college, in the
campus of Govt. Degree College Billawar today on 17-11-2013. Sh. Mohinder
Gupta, Divisional Forest Officer, Billawar, presided over the function
while Dr. Ram Lal Upadhaya, Former UNO Advisor, was the Guest of Honour. The
championship has been organized by J&K Amateur Fencing Association
incollaboration with J&K Sports Council and Govt. Degree College
More than 200 fencers including 50 girls from different districts of the
state will compete for 92 medals in three event i.e. Sabre, Epee and Foil
in the U – 12, U – 17 and Open Category for both boys and girls. Some of
the players of international and national repute like Major Bikram Singh
Jamwal, Mr Rashid Ahmed, J&K Police, Sanjeev Suri, Ujwal Gupta, Ranchan
Sabarwal, Richa Sabarwal, Vishal Thapar, Vilas Radotra, Mr Koushal Sharma
from Billawar and Sagar Sahi from Jammu are also taking part in the
competition. This event is being conducted by Mr. Chottu Lal, Fencing Coach
of J&K Sports Council, and assisted by other senior players like Shivani
Hans and Dimple Thapa.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. B.L. Gupta congratulated the organizers for
holding such a mega sports event in a hilly and remote area like Billawar.
While declaring the championship open, he blessed the participants and put
a word of advice and caution to the fencers to play with sportsman spirit.
DFO Billawar also spoke on this occasion and said that this fencing sports
event would encourage many potential players to compete for national and
international competitions. Dr. Ram L Upadhaya said that fencing has a long
history with universities and schools for at least 500 years and impressed
upon the participants to imbibe the sportsmanship during such competitions.
President, J&K Amateur Fencing Association Mr M J Sharma IFS and General
Secretary, J&K Amateur Fencing Association, Mr. Vijay Sharma sent their
best wishes to the participants. On Day one, U-12 final was played between
Mayank Sharma of Distt. Kathua and Naman Kumar of Jammu Distt. in which
Mayank Sharma emerged as winner. Balbir Singh of Ramban District and
Poorvik Suri of Jammu District secured 3rd and 4th position. Large number
of people of Billawar including school and college students attended the
inaugural ceremony. The prize distribution ceremony will be held on
concluding ceremony of the competition on 19th Nov. 2013.The function ended
with the vote of thanks by Mr. Chottu Lal.
GDC Billawar celebrated International's Women Day
Govt. Degree College, Billawar organized a function today to celebrate International Women’s Day that is celebrated every year on March 8. The day is celebrated to highlight the issues relating to economic, political and social achievements of women and also to show solidarity with the women who are living under unfavorable conditions.
On the occasion, Dr. Nishita, Asstt. Surgeon, SDH Billawar was the chief guest while Dr. Banwari Lal Gupta, Principal of the college, presided over the function. Dr. Nishita spoke about the thought provoking conditions of the women prevalent in the modern society. She raised concerns about the decreasing sex ratio with each census. She interacted with the students and urged them to spread the awareness about the rights of women in their surroundings and also to lead from the front.
Principal, Dr. B.L. Gupta congratulated the college staff and students for celebrating International Women’s Day and reiterated the need of the increased efforts on the parts of teachers and students to alienate the wrong practices prevalent in the society that affect women directly or indirectly. He quoted the statistical figures to go along with his thoughts. He made the audience aware that India ranks 129 out of 146 countries on the gender inequality index as authenticated by Human Development Report, 2011. Adding further, he told the audience that in our state, State Mission Authority for Empowerment of Women (Headed by CM) has been constituted.
Mrs. Sunita Devi, Assistant Prof. in Education reflected on the essence of womanhood and spoke about the possible measures to be taken for maintaining equality among the sexes.
Ms. Shagun Sharma, Lecturer in English conducted the proceedings and presented vote of thanks.
Ms. Zahida Tabassum, student of B.Sc. Part II, was facilitated for courageously fighting the odds and reporting the matter of misbehavior by some miscreants to the police.
The function was attended by the staff members and the students with zeal and enthusiasm.
GDC Billawar celebrated Science Day
GDC Billawar celebrated Science Day today in college premises in order to commemorate National Science Day that is celebrated every year on 28th of Feb. the day is celebrated to honour Sir. C.V. Raman who bagged Nobel Prize for his work on diffraction of light that led to the popularization of “Raman effect”.
On the occasion, a science quiz was organized wherein 7 teams comprising of 21 students participated. The questions covered general science topics that are being taught to the undergraduate students in three year degree course. First prize was bagged by team D comprising Mr. Himmat, Mr. Rajat and Mr. Ankit. 2nd and 3rd prizes were bagged by teams A and B led by Ms. Manika and Ms. Priyanka respectively. a large number of students attended the quiz as audience.
Dr. Vikas Gupta, SDM Billawar, was the chief guest on the occasion while Prof. (Dr.) B.L Gupta, principal of the college presided over the function. Dr. Vikas Gupta applauded the enthusiasm shown by the students for the quiz and hoped that such competitions will be organized regularly in future. Principal, Dr. B.L. Gupta reflected on the life of Sir C.V. Raman after whom the day is celebrated. He explained the “Raman Effect” in a simple and effective way. He further appreciated the students for participation.
Dr. Vikas Dogra, Assistant Professor in Zoology, anchored the proceedings while Ms. Aditi Khajuria and Ms. Kajal Lalotra, students of B.Sc. Part-II, did the scoring for the quiz.
The quiz competition was ably supported by the efforts of Prof. Sudesh Kumar. Other staff members also attended the quiz.

The elections to the student union of Govt. Degree College Billawar were conducted on 19 September 2012.The students elected 20 Class Representatives (CRs) in the free and fair electoral process conducted under the overall supervision of Chief Observer , Dr.B.L.Gupta, Principal, GDC Billawar and election incharges Prof. Hitesh Basotra, Dr. Moolraj,Prof Sudesh Kumar and Prof.Amit Kumar Sharma.
